You're right - it's really shopping that is the manifestation of carbon dependence, not the particular mode of shopping. The internet can be an exacerbating factor if ease of access undermines attempts to cut down on shopping. But if it substitutes for car trips, it might even reduce carbon consumption.  I'll annotate the references where they appear on the site.
